Founded in 1993, SmartWater Technology Ltd redefined the security sector by first inventing the concept of ‘Forensic marking’. Since then SmartWater® has become the UK’s leading provider of forensic traceable liquids.

Invented by former West Midlands Police officer Phil Cleary and his Chartered Chemist brother Mike Cleary, SmartWater was originally conceived with Police use in mind and with a simple vision – to create a powerful deterrent to crime that could be used by householders and businesses alike.

This vision remains the driving force behind SmartWater and has been a crucial factor in the company’s ongoing commercial success.

Phil and Mike Cleary are also responsible for the creation of The SmartWater Strategy™, which maximises the impact of SmartWater traceable liquids to create both a powerful and sustainable criminal deterrent.

SmartWater is an effective deterrent because of the way it directly links thieves with a particular crime scene, and in some cases multiple crimes. It works by heightening the criminal’s fear of arrest and conviction.

Over the last 20 years SmartWater has grown from two brothers operating out of a garage to a multi-million pound profitable business, with over 50 employees and consultants and over 750,000 domestic registrations of our unique traceable liquids. SmartWater is now an internationally recognised Superbrand, with offices in Europe, North America and South America.
