DAYS OF ACTION
Directly influencing the behaviour of thieves and other criminals
Days of Action are a crucial component of The SmartWater Strategy™ as influencing handlers and receivers of stolen goods can directly impact on the behaviour of thieves.
SmartWater Investigators have been engaged in over 150 police-led operations at scrap metal yards, recycling centres and second hand outlets. As part of this we have supported the police on over 1,150 separate visits to proactively search for SmartWater-marked stolen goods.
During these visits we have issued over 700 UV torches, free of charge, to scrap and second hand dealers so they can check and refuse SmartWater-marked items. In some cases, non-compliance with these checks have helped the police to identify and prosecute dealers for handling stolen goods.
Our Special Support Team (SST), which is exclusively staffed by former senior and specialist police officers and ex-military personnel, can provide Day of Action assistance to the police by:
- Searching for SmartWater-marked goods using high powered UV lighting
- Offering advice on identifying stolen assets belonging to our clients
- Educating scrap and second hand dealers about the risks of buying SmartWater marked property – something which quickly gets back to thieves
- Carrying out undercover integrity tests to check compliance with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act (2013)
- Mapping and risk assessing scrap yards on SmartWater’s Intelligence Portal.
All SST members have a wealth of experience supporting the police on Days of Action. They have knowledge of relevant legislation, are equipped with the correct health and safety compliant protective clothing, and are available to attend briefings to ensure compliance with police instructions.
